Mold can develop in joints between mosaic tiles, especially in damp areas such as bathrooms. Fortunately, you can easily prevent it with a few smart steps.
- Ensure a waterproof surface: Always apply a waterproof membrane or sealing layer behind the tiles, especially in the shower. This will prevent moisture from migrating behind the tiles.
- Use water-repellent grout: Choose a water-repellent or epoxy grout. These are moisture-resistant and prevent mold from settling in the grout.
- Ventilate well: Moisture is the biggest culprit. During and after showering, open a window or use a fan so the room dries quickly.
- Clean regularly: Clean the tiles and joints weekly with a mild all-purpose cleaner or natural vinegar. You should dilute the vinegar with water. This way, mold spores won't have a chance to attach.
With proper sealing, water-repellent grouting, ventilation and regular maintenance, your mosaic tiles will stay fresh and mold-free for years.
