ALL ABOUT MOSAIC GROUTING

Mosaic tiles are loved for their versatility and visual appeal. But what really completes a mosaic? The answer lies in the grout. In this blog, we dive deeper into mosaic grouting and answer some frequently asked questions.

What is a mosaic joint?

The grout of a mosaic tile is the space between the individual tiles in the mosaic pattern. This grout performs a crucial role. It not only holds the tiles in place, but also distributes the load and absorbs any movement or expansion of the tiles. To give the mosaic a uniform and finished appearance, the grout can be filled with special grouting compound.

How big is the grout of a mosaic tile?

The size of a grout depends on the mold used. In general, the joint size for mosaic from The Mosaic Factory ranges between 1.5 and 3.0 mm. For specific joint sizes of TMF® mosaic, please refer to the product page.

What color grout should I use?

Choosing the color of your mosaic grout depends on the style you want to create and your personal taste. Here are some considerations:

  • Contrast: Choose a grout color that contrasts with the tiles to make them stand out. Grout colors that contrast with the tiles create a dramatic effect. This is suitable for striking designs with lots of color.
  • Harmony: For a cohesive look, choose a grout color that is close to the tile color. Grouts that are the same color as the tiles create a sleek and modern effect. This is a good option for minimalist designs.
  • Dirt resistance: Dark joints can make dirt and stains less visible.

In general, neutral colors such as gray, beige, brown and white are popular choices.

What type of grout should I choose for mosaic tiles?

The correct choice of grout depends on the application. In general, we recommend grout products from Mapei because of their color variation and quality. There are two types of grout:

  • Cementitious grout: Standard grout suitable in most cases.
  • Epoxy grout: Waterproof and smooth joint, ideal for wet areas.

  3. Spread the grout diagonally across the mosaic tiles with a grout rubber.
  4. Check that the joints are completely filled and remove excess grout with a sponge.
  5. Let the grout dry for 24-48 hours and clean the tiles with water and a sponge.
